Off-Roading and Grave Rubbings (12.29.11)

Near the Lake House at Land Between the Lakes, we had a rare opportunity to take the kids (and Josh) off-roading.  Supposedly, there are over 200 miles of trails winding through woodlands and isolated shorelines, just waiting to be traversed.  My husband thanks the Japanese for this experience; I too am quite happy with my Toyota Land Cruiser's performance.   We stopped for lunch and found our bearings.  My iphone GPS did pick us up, but, there were no exact markings to follow on our quest.  My kind of adventure (i.e. use common sense to find your way home).

We found more than what we had set out to....two cemeteries.  The Coleman cemetery was the first one we discovered, and the oldest grave was that of Rebecca Coleman, born 202 years before I was (yes, that would be 1772)!  Taking care to protect the stones, we captured a few of these remarkable headstones through rubbings.

In some places, there were headstones missing and a few graves were sunken in, but that didn't stop our curiosity and enthusiasm for appreciating the history and ancestry of these families, whoever they were. May they R.I.P.

Scooters Among Us (12.26.11)

The kids received a pair of electric scooters from their grandparents for Christmas this year.  It's quite a gift considering that we vowed to never give the kids forms of electric transportation when they could easily ride their own bikes or scooters.  [Let's not forget the time that Lloyd found the go-cart on the curb and restored it to almost mint condition (the kids still ride that in Martin); or the electric skateboard pulled from the trash that the neighborhood boys successfully rebuilt.]  Let's be honest; vows to remain pure to our self-powered bikes just didn't survive.  Speaking of surviving, you'll be happy to know that my maiden voyage was spent with Grayson, looking at neighborhood Christmas lights.
